Disabled Kids Victims of Double Discrimination
|
It
is bad enough that the Ontario government openly discriminates against
the small religious minorities who use non-Catholic faith based schools
contrary to binding international human rights law. But it is truly
offensive when that discrimination is turned against disabled children,
and they are denied equal support for their disabilities based on the
fact that they are going to a non-Catholic faith-based school rather
than a Catholic school or public school.
A disability is a disability - and government support for disabilities
should not depend on what religion a child is. There is no acceptable
justification why disabled kids in non-Catholic faith-based schools
should get any less support for their disabilities than kids in
Catholic schools. This kind of discrimination against disabled children
is repugnant.
In many cases the costs associated with dealing with disabilities in
schools are so high that lack of equal government support means that
these children are effectively denied the opportunity to be educated in
a context consistent with and supportive of their faith.
